ENGEL, Thomas L. 10/1/1948 - 1/28/2019 Thomas L. Engel was born on October 1, 1948 in Columbus, NE to Donald and Elaine Engel (Marty). He attended Columbus High School and later graduated from University of Nebraska Lincoln with a Bachelor of Arts in English.He married Rickie Mills in 1968 and had their first child, Jeff. They moved to Syracuse, New York where they lived for six years.During this time, Tom received a Master of Education, Master of Arts in English and completed a Cytology program from Syracuse University. In 1977, they returned to Nebraska to be closer to family and had their second child, Adrienne.In Omaha, he worked as a cytotechnologist for Clarkson Hospital and later Physicians Laboratory.He retired in 2006. Tom enjoyed traveling, coaching baseball and volleyball, reading, gardening, hiking, and listening to music. His favorite travel spots to visit were National Parks, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy and most recently several Civil War battlefields across the U.S. He cheered on the Nebraska Women’s Volleyball, Nebraska Football, basketball and the New York Yankees teams.He also loved spending time with his grandkids, Ben, Brielle and Owen. Tom was preceded in death by his father Donald and sister Joyce Schreiber. Tom is survived by his wife Rickie of 50 years, son Jeff (Karen) Engel, daughter Adrienne (Bob) Kanne, mother, Elaine Engel, brothers Tim (Linda) Engel, Mark Engel, grandchildren Ben Engel, Brielle and Owen Kanne, as well as many other family and friends.
