SHAFER, Stephen D. "Steve"
December 18, 1944 - August 2, 2024
Stephen David Shafer “Steve” was born in Washington DC, raised in New Jersey and Lincoln, Nebraska, playing basketball, baseball, and rock throwing during hot summer days. He was also a table tennis, racket ball, and pickle ball wizard. He went to the University of Minnesota where he met the love of his life Patricia. A stunning blonde who captured his heart forever. They reluctantly moved to Omaha and started a family with 3 wonderful kids, Tim, Greg, and Stephanie. The grandkids came as the family grew during all those years that seemed to zoom by in a flash.
He started with Northwestern Bell and became a project manager and could speak the language of early computer programming to be able to convey it to others. After early retirement, he went back to get his masters degree and became a bike shop owner then he went on to work as a trader and programmer for Ameritrade. During the years in Omaha, Pat and Steve met several many wonderful friends and shared lots of good times as well as bad. He loved cycling and rode across the state of Nebraska two times after defeating cancer. Survived a massive heart attack and continued to amaze any doctor he encountered. A true warrior with more resilience than most could ever imagine.
Hobbies filled much of his time between work and after retirement. Precision was his specialty and the hobbies included reading, remote control cars woodworking, fishing lure artistry, sailing, bocce ball, golf, fishing, darts, sound engineering, model trains. He did it all. A silly man with a great heart who loved to hear a great story, and more importantly, loved to tell one. He will be missed more than can be imagined in ways his friends and family don’t even fully understand. A coach, a teacher, a mentor, and the best role model ever.
Steve was preceded in death by his son Tim Shafer, grand daughter Joslyn Dunn, son-in-law Jeff Dunn. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Pat Shafer; son Greg Shafer & wife Shelley; daughter Stephanie Dunn; grandchildren: Matt Dunn & wife Rachel, Nate Shafer & wife Ella, Emily Shafer, Jake Dunn & Paige Myint, Sanel Kesmer; sister Andrea Wagner; many other relatives and friends.
