Originally of Clifford, ND, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023 in Omaha, NE.
Stephen was born prematurely on September 11, 1945, in Minneapolis, MN. When he was age 3, his folks moved to Clifford, ND, where his dad had purchased the local hardware store. Steve helped out in the store and later worked for a local farmer during his high school days. He graduated from Clifford-Galesburg High School and Prairie Bible Institute before marrying Donna Ferguson from Drayton, ND. Shortly after their marriage and Steve’s boot camp, they moved to California for 8 years. He served 6 years in the Navy during the Vietnam War and then sold insurance for 2 years. While in California they adopted their first child, Shawn. They moved to Grand Island, NE, for a short time before settling in Omaha, where they adopted their second child, Michelle. Steve worked various jobs while attending Grace University and graduating with a teaching degree. But because of Donna’s health, he needed a flexible job in order to be available to help her. He ended up having his own painting and drywall business over the next 30 years. Then because of a stroke and Donna’s battle with Alzheimer’s, he retired. He lived in Omaha for the rest of his life.
Steve enjoyed fixing things for his work and at home. But even more so, he enjoyed doing things with Donna—like singing duets, sharing a picnic lunch, walking hand-in-hand at a nearby lake, or sitting evenings with her in their yard swing. He also enjoyed his church relationships and helping out where he could. But his great joy was his relationship with God, which he and Donna could share together.
In his later years, as Donna’s health declined, he joined an Alzheimer’s support group, where he empathized and encouraged others in their journey. He also started a handwritten card ministry to express God’s love to others. He was grateful for the small things placed in his daily life—easy-to-miss gifts from God—and tried to encourage others to do the same. And then there were always the kids and grandkids to relate to and enjoy.
Survived by his son, Shawn; daughter Michelle White (Dennis); grandchildren Keli Vinton Pond (Chad), Chris Sorlien, and Sierra Vinton; and great-grandchildren, Grayson and Kynlee; sisters, Beth Greene, Margaret Cramer, Janet Burns (Jim), and Carol Sherbeck.

Celebration of Stephen's Life: Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 10:30am, with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service, all at Community Bible Church (3616 S 132nd St.)
