Sidney A. Rames Obituary
March 14, 1942 – September 1, 2024

Sidney was born to Roy and Elvera Larson in Edmore, Michigan. A few minutes later her twin sister Sally arrived. After high school graduation, she attended and graduated from Dana College. While teaching in Millard she attended the University of Nebraska and summers at Michigan State where she earned her master's degree. On July 31, 1966, she married Jim (James) Rames. They had two sons, Gordon (Richelle), with their daughter Hannah (finance Cody Lindberg) and son Andrew, Kurtiss (Bethanie) with their sons Ashton and Gaven. Sid was active in Alpha Delta Kappa (Women's Honoree Teaching Sorority) and St. Paul's Lutheran church. At St. Paul's, she taught Sunday school, and catechism, was a leader for Lutheran World Relief, and was a member of WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America).

After Graduation from Dana College in spring 1964 she started her career teaching kindergarten for Millard Public Schools. After a few busy years, she moved to teaching second grade because those students could read. One of her roommates during that time was from Hallem, Nebraska. Hallem had just paved their main street and they had a dance to celebrate the event. Sid and her roommates challenged another bachelor to bring a few guys down for the dance. Jim was one of the lucky ones. He and Sid took a liking to each other. After a short courtship, they were married in July of 1966. Two years later Jim was offered a National Science Foundation Grant to Michigan State. As Sid was from Michigan, this was a way for Sid to spend a year close to her hometown of Edmore and her family. We lived in campus housing and in March of 1969, she gave birth Gordon (we call him Gordie). Sid enjoyed her job as a full-time mom. The two enjoyed many stroller rides in the area.

After Jim's graduation, the family gathered things together and moved back to Millard, Nebraska. Sid spent that year as a full-time homemaker. In the vacant lot behind the house, she had a large garden. She did a lot of work and canned many quarts of veggies that fall. One day a rabbit was enjoying Sid's Garden. To scare it off she found a rock and threw it at the rabbit. The rock hit the rabbit and knocked it over. When she got to it, much to her surprise, she had killed it. She got the shovel and buried it someplace out back.

After one year at home, she went back to teaching full days. Jim and Sid used some of her teaching money to purchase a fold-down camper. In 1972 our second son Kurt entered the world. Sid was now teaching full-time as well as being a homemaker at the same time. This was tough on her. She did get depressed and needed some hospital time to get back to normal. From this time on she had some form of depression for the rest of her life. Some days were good, and some days were not so good. As the kids were growing, the family took many trips in the summers. Some of the places were Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah, South Dakota, Yellowstone, both the upper peninsula and lower part of Michigan, and state parks in Nebraska. Jim received another National Science Grant to Florida State for a summer. The family took the camper and spent the summer in Florida. They visited as far south as the NASA Space Center. Sid enjoyed catching crabs in the Gulf of Mexico and steaming them for meals.

When both boys reached Boy Scout age, Sid became a Cub Scout Den Leader and was an Advancement Chairperson in the Boy Scouts. Sid even completed Wood Badge training (advanced training in Boy Scouting) as Bobwhite. Jim and Sid were very active in Boy Scouts. Their two sons both reached the rank of Eagle with a few Palms.

Let's advance a few years and get the two boys out of high school and off to college. Sid had continued teaching. She was nominated to ADK, an honorary teaching sorority, and joined. It was an activity she enjoyed. She was an officer in both the local chapter and at the state level for ADK. She helped put together an international conference for the United States and Canada.
Sid retired from teaching in 2000 and continued her many church activities. Two activities she took the lead in were quilting and school supplies for Lutheran World Relief. She quilted at church and brought them home to complete. The quilting group would do around 130 quilts each year. For school supplies, she would put them together during late summer. Typically, over 100 backpacks full of school supplies were completed each year.

Sid made sure to get to Kansas for scouting activities for Drew and many orchestra concerts for Drew and Hannah. After they graduated it was time to follow the grandkids in Omaha. Their activities included school plays and vocal music for Gaven, the younger one, and school tennis and tennis tournaments for Ashton. By now Alzheimer's was starting to limit her activities. By January 2024 it was difficult for her to do activities. Jim could not take care of himself and Sid both. She moved to Echo Hills Memory Unit where she lived out the remaining 8 months. She had given up her active lifestyle and had to continue her fight against depression. Her prayers were for God to take her home to be with her parents. After a bad fall this August, in which she broke her neck in two places, she was confined to bed. Because of her cervical collar that restricted the movement of her head, she was spoon-fed her meals. After hard discussions, she was placed in hospice.

God granted her wish and called her to him, on September 1, 2024, with Jim by her side and family arriving shortly after. There were many voiced goodbyes, punctuated with hugs and kisses on her forehead. She enjoyed the many hours of handholding and passed quietly in her sleep. The family is happy she is now without pain and with her parents and many friends in heaven. Yes, we all miss her and will for many years.

She leaves behind her husband, Jim, of 58 years, twin sister Sally Gaeu (Dan), Brother Don Larson (Deana), Brother Jerry Larson, Sister Fran Peterson (Tom), and their families. One also cannot forget the love and support of all the many friends she had outside of the family.

Survived by husband Jim; sons: Gordie & wife Richelle, Kurt & wife Bethanie; grandchildren: Hannah, Drew, Ashton, Gaven; many brothers, sisters, other relatives and friends.
