Sharon (Shari) Jayne Horton July 13, 1945 – April 20, 2024 Shari was born in Bloomington, IL to Cameron and Eunice Phillips where she was welcomed by seven older brothers. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Rantoul, IL where she graduated high school in 1963. She soon met her future husband, Charles (Chuck) Horton who was stationed in Rantoul with the U.S. Air Force. Chuck and Shari were married on January 6, 1967. Throughout Chuck’s career in the Air Force, the family lived in Illinois, North Carolina, Indiana, Guam, and lastly Nebraska where Chuck retired as the NCIOC of the 55th Organizational Maintenance Squadron at Offutt Air Force Base after serving his country for 26 years.
In 1995, the couple decided to move to Chuck’s childhood hometown of Beaufort, SC to be close to the Horton side of the family. They celebrated 54 years of marriage there before Chuck’s passing on October 14, 2021.
One son and one daughter were born to this union: Cole (Ann) Horton and Chelly (Robert) Callaway. One grandson, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter also survive. They are Joseph Callaway, Emily Horton, and Ellie Callaway respectively. Shari also has many surviving nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws, and cousins. Her seven brothers all preceded her in death.
In July of 2022, Cole, Ann, and Emily persuaded Shari to move back to Nebraska. Shari lovingly traded the blue ocean for green cornfields for her family. She soon settled into an apartment close to her family and in August of 2023, she became a member of Wildewood Christian Church.
A small service will be held at the Omaha National Cemetery at 1:30 pm on Thursday, April 25. If you wish, Shari would have preferred donations be made to: Wildewood Christian Church, 1255 Royal Drive, Papillion, NE 68046.
