Sandi is survived by her daughter Jessica Mathews-Thrasher; son Rian Mathews-Thrasher; father Herman Mathews; grandchildren Ashley, Evan, London, Jasper, and Jay; beloved dog Harli; and many other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by mother Irene Mathews and brothers Larry and Alan Mathews.
Sandi was born in Philadelphia, PA, and was the youngest of Herman and Irene’s three children. Her family moved to South Beach where Sandi graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. Sandi’s father, Herman, says “she was always a good girl who never got in any trouble and spent her free time bringing food to people who were less fortunate.” After high school, Sandi moved to Colorado where she enrolled at the University of Northern Colorado and later transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder where she graduated with a degree in Psychology. She would go on to complete her Montessori Certification in California and returned to Boulder where she owned and operated a Montessori pre-school before moving to Omaha.
Sandi dedicated her life to education and worked as a reading teacher and substitute teacher for Omaha Public Schools while tutoring children in her spare time. She instilled her love of learning in her children and grandchildren. In her free time, Sandi loved to be active and ran numerous marathons during her time in Boulder. She would often be found walking with her Golden Retriever at Standing Bear Lake and never missed an opportunity to spoil her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time in Florida visiting her 102 year old father and best friend Herman and cousin Vickie, who was more like a sister to her. Sandi never lost her desire to help those in need and was loved by everyone she met.
Sandi passed away peacefully with family by her side on November 7th and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
CELEBRATION OF SANDI'S LIFE: Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 2:00pm, with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service, all at Braman Mortuary (72 St. Chapel)
In lieu of flowers, memorials given to the family will be used in Sandi's memory at a later date.
