Sandra “Sandy” Jean Hammers (Wood) was born on August 24th, 1939 to Thomas and Laura Wood in Rochester, TX. She grew up with her parents and two brothers, Donald and Victor, in Amarillo, TX. Sandy worked as a seamstress at her fathers dry cleaning business for several years which is where her love for sewing and quilting began.
In February of 1963 Sandy gave birth to her son Tony. Then in October of 1972 her daughter Christi was born. They lived in Okinawa, Japan as well as several cities throughout the Midwest and Texas. Sandy was a strong & independent woman and family was the most important thing to her, and it always showed. Everyone loved Sandy, especially her children.
Sandy worked in retail for Nebraska Furniture Mart for 35 years! During this time, she helped to open their stores in Des Moines, IA as well as Kansas City, KS. While working for NFM she took a trip to New Zealand and while there tried bungee jumping – she was always open to trying new things and having a good time.
In addition to her love of sewing, Sandy also loved to bake desserts as well as cook holiday meals for her family and friends. Everyone has a favorite Sandy dessert – coconut cake, pumpkin pie, fudge, peanut brittle, and divinity to name a few. Sandy was also an avid reader and loved a good mystery or romance novel. You could find Agatha Christy all over her bookshelf.
Sandy was known for her excellent sense of humor and had many friends. She really enjoyed going to the movies. She was a huge fan of Sci-Fi and fantasy – Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. She also loved listening to big band music and boogie-woogie.
Proceeded in death by her mother Laura Wood, father Thomas Wood, brother Donald Wood, and son Tony Romero. Survived by daughter Christi (Brian) Hendrix, and daughter-in-law Delia Hammers; Brother Victor (Tatiana) Wood; Grandchildren: Elisha (Jack) Pursley, Laura Hammers, Anthony Romero-Lopez, Lauren Young, Ricky Young, and Jacob Young; Six great-grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews; Many extended family members and friends.
