CUMMINGS, Genevieve S. 11/5/1925 – 7/29/2017 Age 91 years of Omaha Genevieve Cummings was born on Omaha in 1925.The daughter of Cyrus and Martha Trotter she was brought up with her brothers, James and William, to value family, education, community and church. After high school Genevieve attended Omaha University. She met her husband of 63 years in art class.In 1948, she graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree and she and Brad were married.The honeymoon was spent moving to New Haven, CT, so Brad could finish his degree at Yale University. Upon Brad’s graduation they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where her first three sons, Bradford, Peter and Joel were born.Even at a young age the boys were brought up with values she had learned. Eventually the family moved to Omaha where Douglas and Susan were born.The family was a comfortable one in a home adjacent to Harrison Elementary school. All of the children attended that school as well as a nearby junior high school and regular high school.Genevieve and Brad were popular in the community in groups and neighborhood children. Mostof the family grown up and moved on after high school when Genevieve decided to return to the University of Nebraska at Omaha.While there she accomplished a Masters advanced degree in Library Science and received a teaching certificate.She becamea school librarian in the Omaha Public schools eventually ending up at Harrison Elementary.After retiring 16 years later, she also worked as a reference clerk at the Joslyn Art Museum. Even after retiring she worked as a library specialist in the Omaha Public Library where she usually worked in the children’s section at the Downtown Branch.She always met visitors with a smile and a willingness to help.Some family friends who knew her from the library were heard to say “I wish your Mom was my Mom”. Very often, pupils from her teaching days would bring their own children downtown to meet her. Throughout her life Genevieve always gave of herself.She always had a smile and was willing to give a helping hand.She rarely thought of herself first and hosted a myriad of birthdays and holidays. Sunday dinners were a regular family event. Brad passed in 2013 after 63 years of marriage.Genevieve lived with her daughter Susan until her passing in 2017. Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband Brad and son Joel Cummings; She is survived by her children: Bradford, Peter, Douglas & wife Jacquelyn, Susan Cummings; Brother William Trotter & wife Betty; 6 Grandchildren & 10 Great Grandchildren.
