McGRANAGHAN, Robert Everest 11/24/1925 – 7/21/2021 Robert Everest McGranaghan was born to Charles and Zita McGranaghan in Falls City, NE, on November 24, 1925 and was the youngest of seven children. When Bob was 5 years old, his mother passed away, so he and his 9 year old brother, Jack, were sent to live with family in Hancock, NY. Over the next few years Bob and Jack lived with family in both Hancock and Omaha. Although this was a tumultuous upbringing, Bob was an agreeable child and never let these setbacks affect his fun-loving personality. On October 20th, 1943, during WWII, Bob joined the United States Navy and was assigned to the Destroyer USS Nicholas (DD449). The Nicholas was honored as the first ship to sail into Tokyo Bay at the end of the war. Their orders were to pick up various Generals, Admirals and dignitaries and transfer them to the USS Missouri for the signing of the documents ending the war. On September 2, 1945, Bob was ordered to escort a Russian general to the deck of the USS Missouri, and because of this he witnessed the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. Bob always thought it was a great honor to witness the ending of the second World War.He was on the USS Nicholas until the war ended and was honorably discharged on March 30th, 1946. After the war, Bob returned to the States. While attending school in Omaha, Bob met and fell in love with Bonnie Jeannine Curran. They married and were blessed with 13 children. Bob worked for the Omaha Municipal Utilities District [CS1] until his retirement at age 62. Bob and Bonnie had 30 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He spent the next 34 years after retirement enjoying life, travelling with Bonnie and enjoying their large family together. After Bonnie’s passing in 2003, Bob continued living life to the fullest.Bob liked wood crafting and generously made special pieces of furniture for his family. Bob loved traveling to St. Simon’s Island, GA, where two of his daughters live. While there, he loved walking on the pier and along the beach. He was a devout Catholic and served in many capacities in his church; he loved the rosary and was a man of strong faith.Bob spent many years with his long-term companion Becky Briggs. The two cared for each other very much. In 2017, Bob and his entire family were saddened by the sudden death of his daughter Cathy Livingston. Her fun loving spirit brought joy to all who knew her and Bob missed her dearly. Bob was an amazing pitch partner. His kind spirit and humble heart will be missed by many Robert was preceded in death by wife Bonnie McGranaghan, daughter Cathy Livingston, great-grandson Eric Leiferman, son-in-law Bill Kunneke; He is survived by his children: Chrissy Chapman, Charlotte McGranaghan, Shirley (Stephen) Smith, Bob (Nancy) McGranaghan, Mary (Tim) Preister, Pat (Patty) McGranaghan, Therese “Tina” McGranaghan, Kevin McGranaghan (Don Rigler), Rita Kunneke, Tim (Vicki) McGranaghan, Bridgette (Joe) Ford, Marty (Shelly) McGranaghan; Longtime companion Becky Briggs; Brother Jack McGranaghan; 30 Grandchildren & Many Great Grandchildren, other relatives and friends VISITATION: Sunday, July 25, 2021 from 5-7:00pm, with a ROSARY at 6:00pm, all at Braman Mortuary (Southwest Chapel) FUNERAL MASS: Monday, July 26, 2021 at 10:30am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church (5801 Oak Hills Dr.) INTERMENT: Calvary Catholic Cemetery Braman Mortuary – Southwest Chapel 6505 S. 144 St. Omaha, NE68137 402-895-3400
