BEHRENS, Robert E. “Bob” 9/26/1924 – 2/6/2019 It all began September 26, 1924 when Bob was born to Clarence and Martha (Wislicin) Behrens in Omaha, Nebraska.He was an only child, which he always felt was unfair. However, the girls living next door became like sisters, whom he could tease and torment. In his junior high school years, his home became very unstable as his parents’ marriage was at risk.He would call home from school often to see if his mother was still there. From then on, he fought the demons of fear, rejection, and anxiety.It were these demons that prevented him from being allowed to serve in the military in World War II. This was a great disappointment to him because he wanted to serve his country. He worked for the Civil Service for 35 years.Most of that time, he was a letter carrier walking many miles, up and down hills and stairs of Omaha, with a heavy bag on his shoulders.Of course, it was through hail, rain, snow, hot and cold weather, but he enjoyed it. He developed a relationship with some of his patrons, listening to them and giving encouragement.His job, to him, was more than simply delivering mail. One time, he came upon a baby who was choking; the mother was frantic. Bob was able to clear the wad of toilet paper out of the baby’s throat, saving its life. God gifted him with a beautiful baritone voice.He sang in choirs and sang many solos at church for weddings and funerals.It was one of his ways of honoring his heavenly Father. On June 15, 1958, he married Cora Brinkman.Together, to this marriage was born: Doug, Kay, Beth, and David.Over the years, the family grew to include Doug’s wife, Karen, and their children: John and Rachel; David’s wife, Cindy, and their children: Ben, Kaylin, and Caroline.He loved his grandchildren and family was very important to him. He loved the Lord.His parents did not attend church when he was young and he gives credit to a Sunday school teacher who shared Jesus with him.He made a commitment to the Lord when he was young. He grew in his faith, loved to pray for people, and was an encourager. He was active in church, and devoutly involved in the healing ministry. Later in life, when he was more homebound, a small group of friends gathered weekly at his home.This dedicated Christian group functioned as his spiritual family, walking through the ups and downs of life.From this group, a non-profit, outreach ministry was birthed, the King’s Garden. Its purpose is cultivating community, nurturing spiritual growth, and planting truth in the next generation. As bodies don’t live forever, after his bout of pneumonia that brought him to the hospital, God graced him with the knowledge that it was time to go home, and he peacefully accepted this.For the first time in his life, the demons of fear, rejection and anxiety were gone and he walked peacefully through the last three days of his life into the arms of his Savior. Bob is survived by his Wife of 60 years, Cora Behrens; Children: Doug (Karen), Kay Behrens, Beth Behrens, David (Cindy); 5 Grandchildren. Family will be receiving friends on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019 from 3-5:00pm at Emmanuel Fellowship Church (8345 Crown Point Ave.) Celebration of Bob’s Life: Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 at 11:30am at Emmanuel Fellowship Church.
