In Loving Memory of Mayme Elaine Swanson
Mayme Elaine Swanson, born March 20, 1926, in Hutchinson, Kansas, was the cherished third daughter of Louis Earl and Gladys Blanch Fletcher. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Knight Swanson, and her dear son, Mark Swanson.
Elaine is survived by her son Scott (Linda, deceased) Swanson; grandson Chad (Stephaine) and great grandsons Archer, Fletcher and Spencer; grandson Nicholas (Erinn) and great granddaughter Kaia; daughter-in-law Susan Swanson (Mark) and grandsons Daniel and Ben (Brittany) Swanson; and son Greg (Maria) Swanson and grandchildren Jacob, Zachary and Sarah.
As a vibrant member of her Omaha community, Elaine shared her love of nature through her involvement and work in her local garden club and Lauritzen Gardens, and by volunteering as an educational docent at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.
Active in many church programs as a dedicated member of Christ Community Church, Elaine was passionately focused on supporting missionary programs and mentorship programs for young women. She also enjoyed participating in the Omaha Christian Women’s Club and Women’s Bible Study Fellowship.
Elaine spent many of her formative years in Iowa surrounded by a loving family, including her two older sisters, Lois Shotwell and Bernice Stoermer. An excellent student, she developed a passion for the arts, excelling in a variety of mediums: vocal and instrumental music (particularly the cello), acting, playwriting, and painting.
After meeting her husband Dick upon his return from World War II, they began their lives together, and were blessed to raise three spirited, wonderful and accomplished sons.
While raising her children, Elaine’s artistic journey continued to flourish. She studied with prominent Nebraskan artists, developing her skill in oil painting and watercolors, along with charcoal sketching, and later turned to photography as another way to capture her love of nature. Wherever she made her home, she showcased her delight in flowers and plants, and her gardens were works of art themselves. Her artistry also extended beyond her pictures and garden to her home, personal style, and everyday life.
Elaine and Dick enjoyed traveling, creating meaningful experiences and memories during their adventures across the United States and abroad. Elaine’s love and service to her Lord informed the love and care she gave everywhere else: in her home life, to her extended family and friends, and to her neighbors and community. Those fortunate enough to cross paths with her experienced these beliefs through her welcoming care and uplifting conversation.
Elaine delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they loved being in her presence - her love, pride, and devotion toward them was palpable. Known for her love of games, Elaine found great joy playing cards and board games with friends and family. Her heartfelt laughter was contagious. An avid reader, she could frequently be found with a book in hand and a cat curled up in her lap.
Much more could be said of this loving, gracious, intelligent, and beautiful woman. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Elaine was and always will be cherished by her family. Already she is deeply and profoundly missed, and her loving spirit, strength of character, and deep faith in God will forever be treasured in the hearts of those who knew her.
Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, we love you eternally. We will see you in Heaven.
