Martin “Marty” William Schipporeit was born to Martin Henry Schipporeit and Dorothy Mediger Schipporeit in Rapid City, SD on February 14, 1937.Marty graduated from Rapid City High School in 1954, and enlisted in the Navy in December 1954. He served his entire navy career as a Hospital Corpsman at the US Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA.While on leave to see family in LeSueur, MN he met his future wife Corrine (Chris) Strand. They married in 1958 and celebrated their 66th anniversary in September of 2024. Three children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild made their family complete. After receiving a degree in soil science in 1962 from the University of MN he went on to his lifetime work in the agricultural field, primarily as a service representative in fertilizer sales. Through his work, Marty met many people who became lifelong friends.Marty’s faith was important to him as was being of service. He joined the Catholic Church in 1980 and he was proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus. He especially loved working the fish fries and pouring the beer. He was also an active member of both the Jaycees and the Millard Lions Club.Marty loved to attend a football game, especially a Minnesota Gopher or a Cornhusker game. When unable to attend in person, he was known to throw a foam “brick” at the TV screen when a bad call was made. Every June you could find Marty at the College World Series Games rooting for the underdog, tailgating, and singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the top of his voice.Marty and Chris enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Because he had a build in GPS he was always the navigator no matter the destination. One of his favorite places to visit was the Black Hills of South Dakota where he would tell his grandkids stories of his adventures growing up. We had to make sure that he censored them.Marty never knew a stranger and he also had an uncanny tendency to run into someone he knew wherever he went. He loved a party however big or small and his many friends throughout the years can attest to that. Golfing, playing cards and fishing were some of his joys. He was good at bluffing in poker and telling fish tales. He is survived by his wife Chris, daughter Liz Gunkelman (Bob) grandsons Matt (Haley) and Joe (Sami);son Tom (Janet) granddaughter Maddy; daughter Ellen Schipporeit Oliver (Cameron), grandsons Alex and Ayden, granddaughters Emma and Melissa Langston (Luther) great-grandaughter LuLu ; brother Dennis (Barb) their children and grandchildren; other favored nieces, nephews, dear old friends, and many new ones.
