Marjorie A. Keenan

November 15, 1916 — August 31, 2014

Marjorie Adele Keenan was born on November 15, 1916 in Omaha to Duncan and Marguerite (Elsasser) O’Leary. She graduated from St. John’s High School in 1935. After completing her business education, she worked for Burroughs until her marriage to Thomas Joseph Keenan in Omaha NE on July 1, 1936. The family moved to Bellevue during WW II to accommodate Tom’s employment at the Marten Bomber Plant in 1943, and resided on Calhoun St. until 1950, when they moved to an acreage off Bellevue Blvd. In 1974 the family moved back to Omaha. The Keenan family included 10 daughters and 3 sons. Tom and Marge were married 41 years, until Tom’s passing in 1977. Marge was first and foremost a devoted wife and mother. She gave her life to them and her faith. As well as being a dedicated mother of 13 children, she was involved in many outside activities including the Legion of Mary at St. Mary of Bellevue, St. Agnes of Omaha and was the initiator and first Curia of the Legion of Mary at Christ the King in Gering, Nebraska. Marge was also a member of the Altar Society, CCD coordinator, and was the impetus in establishing the Back to the Basics Curriculum at St. Agnes. She was very active in Girl Scouts most of her life. In her youth as a Girl Scout she earned the Golden Eaglet, the highest honor in scouting. As an adult, she was a Girl Scout leader, a camp leader, and scheduler of all scout troops who camped at Camp Maha. She was also instrumental in establishing Camp Wa-Sha-Tee. The Great Plains Girl Scouts presented Marge with a pin for her 70 years for the longest and continuous member as a scout. She often spoke to Girl Scouts and young women eloquently, to keep the words of the scout’s promise, “to honor God and my Country and serve others...” and encouraged them to give their time and talents in service to their community. Marge retired as an Executive Secretary for Interstate Brands in 1978. She lived in Gering NE for 12 years before moving back to Omaha in 2003, where she moved into an assisted living facility until 2008. She then moved to Fort Worth TX to be cared for in her daughter’s home. Marge’s last 4 years were in Omaha. She died peacefully in the Omaha Nursing Center under the care of St. Jude Hospice on August 31, 2014. Preceded in death by husband Thomas J.
