Karen Larae Bartels

Born July 25, 1941 to Wilson and Margaret (Lee) Flood on the family farm in Newman Grove, NE. Karen, a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, flew on angels wings to meet her Savior on November 24, 2013. Karen was embraced and loved by her surviving siblings: Don and Viola Flood, Raymond and Connie M Flood, Charles and Connie J Flood, Terry “Hook” and Cheryl Schaecher. After graduating from Newman Grove High School, Karen’s Christian roots lead her to Dana College, where she studied elementary education. Upon receiving her certification, she taught second grade at Millard Public Schools. Karen shared a duplex across the street from the non-air conditioned Millard K-12 school on Millard Avenue. Don Fulton was a mail carrier in Millard. He courted Karen by whistling as he crossed the schools’ playground. Their courtship included many family dates with Don’s children, Nancy, Kay, and David. Karen and Don’s (deceased) twenty year marriage began on June 6, 1964. The love circle widened when Karen married Robert Bartels on July 27, 1996. Karen counted among her many blessings her extended family: Dean and Nancy Turpen, Mark and Kay Hahn, David and Patricia Fulton, Phil and Janet Bartels Bohl, Marcia Blum and Merle, Linda Davis and Paul Bellinger, Steven and Sonia Bartels. Her grandchildren Luke and Leah Janke, Jill Janke, Blake and Amy Turpen, Scott and Brooke Fries, Andrew and Cara Bixel, Neal Fulton, Tim Bohl, Mitch and Katie Blum, Robbie Bartels and eleven great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Karen’s life was enriched further through her volunteer service at church, Immanuel Hospital, and Lioness Club. She drew great joy and friendships from her church, Oldies But Goodies group, golf, card club, Husker athletics and CWS games. Karen’s faithfulness and devotion to her Savior during her earthly life’s journey was comforting and inspiring to all who knew her.
