John Allen Lammel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator and friend, was born July 16, 1941 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and departed this life on Friday, January 14, 2011, in Omaha, Nebraska. John was a lifelong learner and teacher who began his career in education in the Crete Public Schools following graduation from Doane College in 1963. He and his family moved to Omaha in 1967 where he became Assistant Junior/Senior High Principal in the Millard Public Schools. He earned his EdD in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska in 1974. John spent 26 years in the Millard district. His tenure included opening the new Millard High School in the fall of 1970 and the transition to Millard South High School in the fall of 1981. John was always an active participant in his professional organizations. In 1993, after serving as President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, he and Glenda moved to Virginia where he served the association for 7 years as the Director of High School Services. After a second retirement in 2000, John and Glenda returned to Omaha. Soon thereafter, John’s professional life came full circle as he returned to the University of Nebraska to serve as a senior lecturer in the Department of Educational Administration where he worked until Thursday, January 13. While John truly loved his work and his Cornhuskers, his greatest passion was his family. John and Glenda planned their weekends around the grandkids activities including swim meets, soccer, and basketball. John cherished the moments when all of his family was together whether that included dinner at home or spending time at the lake. John’s family was a source of great pride and inspiration for him.
