Joanne was a graduate of Omaha Technical High School where she was Vice President of the Senior Class, a Varsity Cheerleader, Homecoming Queen and head of the Art Club. Joanne was married to Dean Kelley on September 17, 1948. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed nothing better than family get togethers. She was an avid dog lover and never met an animal she could not love. Joanne and Dean were members of the Benson Square Dancing Club and the Shriners. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Mid-America Wood Carvers Association.
She was a true artisan of woodcarving, wood burning, painting, sketching, embroidery and making her marvelous pies.
She and Dean raised 4 children, 2 dogs, 2 litters of puppies and a squirrel while living at Pipal Park in Omaha Nebraska. They moved to Cedar Creek Nebraska and enjoyed life on the lake for many years. Joanne loved the nature that surrounded them at their lake home. She gave regular reports to her children about the birds, the Blue Herons, Eagles, Pelicans and Orioles that were regular visitors. She and Dean hosted a Bluebird nesting box for the State of Nebraska’s annual count of Bluebirds. In her final years she lived at Pacific Springs Assisted Living where she enjoyed Bingo, Yoga, Trivia and Bible Study with Pastor Sarah.
Joanne was a member of Sunset Hills Baptist Church for 47 years, where she served as chairperson of the Diaconate Board, President of the American Baptist Women and a member of the Prime Timers (fellowship group for those over 60). She was known to be a woman of prayer with a long list of people from her church, Pacific Springs, widows and her children and grandchildren. In every prayer she named her children, their spouses and grandchildren by name one by one.
Celebration of Life Service will be on Saturday, September 17th at 1 p.m at Sunset Hills Baptist Church (9216 Pacific St.), with a Reception to Follow.
