Joan Fenton

March 21, 1932 — June 7, 2022

FENTON, Joan P.
March 21, 1932 – June 7, 2022

Joan was born Joan Patricia Hanretty in Brooklyn on March 21, 1932 to Eugene and Betty Hanretty as 1 of 8 children. Her siblings were Betty, Donald, Bob, Eugene, Eddie, Alice, and Margie.  She was third from the youngest. She went to Secretarial School and lived with her family until she married Joe Fenton, May 12, 1956.

Joe and Joan had four children; three girls, Joanne, Jayne, and Jill, and one son, Jon, who passed away suddenly in February 2022. The Fenton family moved around a few times for Joe’s career in the late 50’s through early 70’s. Starting out in Brooklyn, NY, then off to Puerto Rico, and then on to Pittsburgh, PA. Huntington Station on Long Island, NY, was next on the tour and then the family finally moved to Omaha in 1973. Joan’s 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren have all grown up around Omaha.

Joan’s gift upon Joe’s retirement from Kiewit was an in-ground pool where they could enjoy exercise and family. All of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren have learned to swim there. Joan’s husband, Joe, passed away in 2006, and Joan lived independently ever since.

Joan enjoyed playing bridge, spending quality time with family, and traveling.  She had many pets throughout her life, cats and dogs, but most recently she had a cockatiel named Ziggy and took care of a feral cat named Bingo.  Joan was an animal lover.

Joan had a wonderful life and was surrounded by family up until her final moments.  She will be held in our hearts forever as we carry her in our cherished memories.  We will miss her dearly and indefinitely, but it brings us peace to know she is joining her loving husband and son in heaven.

Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Fenton and her son Jon Fenton. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Joanne and Garry Vamosi, Jayne and Bob Schnaidt, Jill and Jim Fishbaugh, daughter-in-law, Gerrie Fenton; 9 grandchildren, Mike, Michelle, Jenny, Kristi, Tyler, Cory, Alyssa, Joe, and Jason; and 10 great grandchildren.
