Jerry Douglas Smith was born on July 8, 1952 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to parents Jack Smith and Betty Schultz. He had six brothers and sisters; Jacqueline (Jim) Brown, Glynda Pool (Darrell) Janice Davis, Orlan Smith, Norlin Smith and Jill (Danny) Ausmus.
He attended Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Nebraska and graduated in 1970. After High School he attended Wayne State College for 1 year on a football scholarship. After leaving Wayne State he returned back to Omaha, Nebraska to work with his father in the construction business. He obtained a Real Estate License in the late 70’s as well. In the summer of 1971 he met his wife Jo Anne Lucas. They were married August 11, 1973.
They had 3 sons from that marriage Jeremy L. Smith, Joshua A. Smith and Jesse J. Smith.
The boys used to call them the “J” family.
Jerry was known for pulling silly pranks on his friends and family.
Jerry loved anything about the Colorado Mountains and searching for gold or lost treasures.
He spent his honeymoon in the Colorado Rockies at his grandfather Schultz cabin panning for gold! More recently he took a trip to Alaska and also did some more gold panning. In 1978 he moved his family to Leadville, Colorado where he worked in an underground molybdenum mine.
Another of his favorite things was the ocean and scuba. He always wanted to search the oceans for treasure as well. As time went on the physical adventures got less and the online adventures took their place. He would often spend hours “scrolling” on the internet for weird and unusual articles.
Of all the things he loved and enjoyed, his most precious were his three sons and grandchildren of whom he has nine.
Micheal Smith, Dillion Smith, Braedon Smith, Cayley Smith, Serenity Smith,
Kinley Smith, Devyn Smith, Jace Smith and Layla Smith.
He had a big heart for all these children and he was so very proud of all of them. His passing leaves a big hole in the family and he will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jack Q. Smith and Betty M. Smith
