Jerry H. Binns

March 14, 1937 — August 29, 2019

Jerry Hubert Binns (82) March 14, 1937-August 29, 2019 Jerry Hubert Binns was born to John Hubert Binns and Emma Allene Marguerite (Greene) Binns on March 14, 1937, in LaGrange, Georgia. He was the oldest of four children, an Eagle Scout and a supportive big brother while working hard to get good grades and make money to contribute to the family in lean times. He graduated from LaGrange High School and attended LaGrange College on a tennis scholarship. He was called to be a minister and completed his theology degree at the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. It was in Louisville that he met Nancy Jane Howser, his wife of 24 years. They married and moved to Sterling, Colorado, for his first church, then to Bridgeport, Nebraska, where Jonathan was born. They sought a church closer to the big city and moved to Omaha to work with Hope Presbyterian Church that had been meeting at the Western Electric plant. It was this church that lead Jerry to meeting his two dearest and most loyal friends, Kit and Dick Corwine. They would remain steadfast throughout his entire life. Shortly after moving into the manse, Heather was born. Jerry eventually pursued a PhD from the San Francisco Seminary completing a dissertation on building a church in an area with booming growth (like Millard in the 1970's). Jerry loved playing tennis and was a fixture in the city tournaments around Omaha. Glenn Pelecky was his doubles partner for several years and they were unstoppable (if you asked them!).They really did make a good partnership. Jerry began serving as an interim pastor for church congregations that were between pastors. He would take care of personnel and budget issues so the new pastor had things in order before leading a new church. Members and staffs of churches where he served in this capacity were incredibly grateful for his leadership and ability to complete a lot of work in a short amount of time. Jerry was an involved father who encouraged education, sports and hard work for his kids. Both Jonathan and Heather appreciated his high expectations and support in reaching their goals. Jerry is survived by his two children, Jonathan & Heather, two granddaughters, Jillian and Alene (Heather & Jeff), brother Tim (Bobbie), sister Angela (Ray Cox), and brother Phillip (Dot). The care Jerry received at Hillcrest Hospice in Millard, NE in his last 9 days on earth exceeded any possible expectation of how peacefully someone can exist at the end of life. Per Jerry's explicit request, there will be a private memorial at a future date. If you would like to make a memorial donation in his name, please choose a church, school or charitable organization of your choice.
