Jean J. Larson

August 17, 1932 — November 3, 2024

Jean Joan (Cowden) Larson passed away Sunday November 3, 2024 at the age of 92. She was born August 17, 1932 in Casey IA, the last of four daughters born to Roy Otis Cowden and Mae Della Mowry. She grew up on the family farm south of Casey, Iowa, partially before the advents of power and indoor plumbing, and when horses were the primary farm implements. She attended the local country schools and then received a teaching degree from Drake University in Des Moines. She began teaching first grade at Roosevelt and Rue Elementary Schools in Council Bluffs, Kellom Elementary in Omaha, and then at the Hillside cottages in District 66. She met her husband Dale Lynn Larson when he convinced her to become his bridge partner. They eventually married on July 22, 1957 and spent the rest of their lives together in Omaha. They raised two sons, Doug and Rod. While her sons were in elementary school, Jean earned a degree from UNO and returned to teaching 1st grade for a full career in District 66 at Hillside and then Prairie Lane Elementaries. Her husband passed away in 2021 and she is survived by her sons, daughter-in-law (Mary), two grandchildren, granddaughter in-law, and two great grandchildren.

Jean was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, extended relative, friend, and early school teacher to many. She was especially talented at crafts, creating much of her own clothing and such things as wheat weavings and custom costumes for her grandchildren. She and Dale enjoyed frequent travel when their health allowed, and she greatly valued staying connected with all of her friends, colleagues, and relatives. But her ability to connect with and support her severely autistic grandson was especially unique and appreciated. Having started in a ‘pre-electric’ world, she impressed all by learning and using current technology right up until her final days.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Jean and Dale will be interred privately at Evergreen Cemetery, In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed in Jean's memory, to a Special Olympics program of their choice.
