Janice Ruth Young

Janice Ruth Young 7/23/1940 – 12/25/2020 Janice Ruth Walker Young was born on July 23, 1940 in Sparta, Wisconsin to Harry and Dorothy (McCollough) Walker.Janice always considered Sparta her hometown; however, due to her father’s job with Corps of Engineers, she had the opportunity to live in Bolivia, South America as a child and in Germany during her high school years. The family also moved to Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan, and Wisconsin over the years.She graduated high school in 1959 and then attended the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas majoring in education.After her college graduation in 1963, she was hired to work at Matfield Green Elementary school in Matfield, Kansas where she taught kindergarten through 4th grade.In August 1963, she married David Young and had two children – Kristi Lynn Young (1968) and Michael David Young (1970).In 1968 she moved to Schuyler, Nebraska.She taught at District 1 (Richland, Nebraska) for 35 years.During this time, she taught preschool through 7th grade and worked as special education para.Janice loved working with kids!She retired in 2003 at the age of 63. While living in Schuyler, she volunteered at the First Presbyterian Church by teaching Sunday School, organizing Vacation Bible School and singing in the choir.In her spare time, Janice enjoyed playing bridge (or any card game), making crafts, painting, coloring, and traveling.Her most exciting trips were to China and Hawaii.She also loved spending time with family, especially her grandkids.Janice had a love for pets and always had a dog or a cat (or both) in the house.In 2007, Janice sold her house in Schuyler and moved to the Nye Square retirement community in Fremont, Nebraska.She became an avid fan of NASCAR and rarely missed a televised race.Janice was Clint Bowyer’s #1 fan!!She finally moved to Omaha to be closer to family in 2017.Janice passed away at Brookestone Village (skilled nursing facility) on December 25, 2020 at the age of 80. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Dorothy Walker; siblings, Janet Walker and Barbara Jean Walker; and son, Michael Young.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Paul Richling, and grandsons, Zachary and Tyler Richling.She is also survived by other family and friends. Celebration of Janice’s Life: Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020 at 10:30am, with visitation one hour prior to the service, all at Braman Mortuary (Southwest Chapel) Interment: Schuyler Cemetery, Schuyler, NE.
