REMEMBERING JAMES KANTOR
James (Jim) Louie Kantor, age 64, of Springfield, Nebraska, was born June 19, 1960, in Omaha, to parents Louis and Edith Kantor. Born on Father’s Day, Jim was their only son, joining five older sisters: Dee, Pat, Barb, Shirley and JoAnn. The family lived on the Leo Timmerman & Sons Feedlot west of Springfield for many years where Lou served as its manager.
Jim graduated from Springfield Platteview High School in 1978. Shortly after, he joined the United States Navy Seabees Construction Battalion as a reservist while attending Metropolitan Community College where he studied to be an automotive technician. He was a member of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years.
Jim married Patricia (Patti) Shields of Ralston on July 12, 1986. The city of Springfield was their home for five years. In 1991, the couple moved to an acreage five miles south of Springfield on Highway 31. They welcomed a son, James Jr. (JR) on October 2, 1990, and a daughter, Megan, on November 10, 1994.
Their children attended Louisville Public Schools where they were in many activities, with JR’s primary passion being American Legion baseball while Megan developed a love for horses as a member of the Cass County Bridle & Saddle 4-H Horse Club. Patti was seen often at the baseball diamond while Jim stayed busy hauling Megan’s horse to many shows.
Once the children graduated high school, Jim became involved in the Nebraska Airboaters Association becoming a lifetime member in 2020. He was currently serving as a director of the Plattsmouth area, an elected position he has held for several years.
Jim worked as a heavy equipment operator for a number of construction companies, including 17 years at Martin Marietta Aggregate in Weeping Water. In 2005, he joined the Nebraska Department of Roads as senior highway maintenance where he was still employed when severe breathing issues began affecting his health. Jim died on November 6, 2024.
In addition to his wife and children, and his five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Jim is survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins.
In lieu of flowers donations in Jim’s memory can be made to the Nebraska Airboaters Association (NAA, PO Box 111, Columbus, NE 68602).
