Hawkins, James E. "Jim"

9/8/1951 - 9/20/2023

James (Jim) Edward Hawkins, 72, of Omaha, Nebraska died September 20, 2023 at his home surrounded by his wife, Peggy, son, Jonathan and daughter-in-law Malynne after being diagnosed with glioblastoma in the fall of 2022. Jim was born, September 8, 1951 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Harold W. Hawkins and Lorraine J. Hawkins. The family lived in Lincoln until 1960 when they moved to Millard, Nebraska. He married Peggy Jensen in March of 1974. He graduated from Millard Jr.-Sr. High School in 1969 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science then an MBA.

Growing up he always enjoyed sports and outdoor hobbies. He played baseball, football, basketball, track and golf. An avid outdoorsman, he often hunted or fished with his father and brothers and, as he got older, with his own children, nephews and friends. He enjoyed many Canadian fishing vacations to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario; and being on the family farm near Milligan, Nebraska. Traveling was something he frequently experienced. He visited most of the US, and over 15 foreign countries, including China, Egypt, Greece, Ireland, Scotland, The Caribbean, northern Europe, and Central America. He worked at the same company his entire adult life, starting as a technician and retiring as the plant manager at Continental Can, now known as Crown Cork and Seal. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends in which he frequently cooked mouth-watering dinners (prime rib) and dead-panned ‘dad jokes’ to everyone’s delight.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Lorraine (Odvody) Hawkins, his brother Gerald Hawkins; his brothers-in-law Gary Jensen and Mark Jensen; and sister-in-law Patti Jo Jensen. He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Jensen), sons Thomas and Jonathan (Malynne), daughter Kristiana (Andrew) Avery; brother Wes (Mary) Hawkins; sister-in-law Billie Hawkins; brother-in-law Steven (Sharon) Jensen; grandchildren, Franklin and S. Alexander Hawkins; Livinia and Aksel Avery; uncle Roger (Joyce) Odvody; aunt Norma Jelsma; nephew Eric (Samantha) Hawkins, Andrew Jensen, Nathan (Jamie) Jensen, Nicholas (Betsy) Jensen; nieces Stephanie (Noel) Watson, Latonia (Justin) Fetters, Melissa (Ryan) Smith, Anita (Aaron) Wood, Sandee Overton, and Michelle Hansen; numerous cousins and friends.
