Horace A. "Harry" Cameron

January 31, 1923 — December 27, 2018

Horace Alexander Cameron, Jr.was born on January 31, 1923 in Omaha, Nebraska to Horace Alexander Cameron , Sr. and Edna Pennington. He proved early that he was a survivor, weighing 2.5 pounds at birth. Life was not easy for young Harry. His mother left the family when he was one month old and he lived in several foster type situations until he turned seven. Little did he know, those would be the happiest memories of his young life. His father remarried when Harry was 7 and he moved into the family home. Those were harsh years with his stepmother, but once again he proved himself a survivor. His family moved several times and he eventually, graduated from Underwood High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served until 1946.Harry saw action in the Philippines and was stationed in postwar Japan. He was very proud of his service to his country and received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Before the war, he worked at Union Pacific, and then again afterwards for several years. He attended university in Minnesota and Omaha but did not finish his degree. When he left the UP, he eventually became an independent contractor along with being a real estate broker for many, many years. He married Sarah Ann Pace in June of 1952. Together, they had 5 children: Stephen, twins John and Ronald, daughter Patricia and Lawrence, his fourth son. Although they remained married, they did not live together for most of their marriage. Their relationship remained amicable until Sarah’s death in 2012.Harry had several grandchildren:Kristina and Jonathan Jacobs; Bree, Christopher, and Timothy Cameron; Jeremy, Jennifer, and Joshua Cameron and two step grandchildren Jamie Young and Jim Grandgenett along with several great grandchildren. Harry had a beautiful tenor voice and enjoyed sharing it with friends. He also enjoyed gardening and considered himself a good landscaper. An avid reader, he wrote his memoirs. Harry was exposed to the Christian faith but lived his life on his terms. He acknowledged there was a God, but not the need for a relationship with God. However God had other plans for Harry. It is with great joy that we witnessed the man who thought he could make a deal with God came to the realization that he needed God in his life. At age 95, God drew him to Himself and unveiled his love. Harry testified weeks before his death that Jesus had filled his heart with the love of God. He developed a hunger for God and wanted the bible read to him. This was a miracle in his life and we are grateful. Harry was preceded in death by his wife Sarah Cameron; Sons: Larry, Steve and Ron Cameron. He is survived by:½ brother Melville Cameron and ½ sister Eleanor Cameron: Son -John (Cindy) Cameron, Daughter-Patty (Michael) Jacobs, Daughter-in-law Karen (Ron) Cameron. Many grandchildren listed above & several great grandchildren. A Gathering for family and friends in Memory of Harry will be Sunday, January 13th from 1:00-3:00 pm at the VFW Post 2503, 8904 Military Rd., Omaha, Ne. Memorials to the Salvation Army
