Gene Herman Tallant, 85 years, Born: 10/10/1926, Omaha, NE, Died: 10/19/2011 at Council Bluffs, IA. Served in the US Marines Corps, Nov. 1943 to May 1946. Gene was a Minnesota resident from 1947 until 2005. He is preceded in death by by his wife, Carin Burkhart Tallant in 1976; son, Gene C. Tallant in 2004; companion, Elfriede K. Carlson in 2000; brothers, Sidney L. Tallant & Walter Tallant; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline (Albert) Jackson & Shirley (Richard) Thompson; brother-in-law, Kenneth Stewart; parents, Charles Edgar and Pauline Ellen Tallant of Phelps City, MO. Gene is survived by his sister, Judith Stewart; sister-in-law, Sylvia Tallant; cousins, Delmas Howell, Robert Resler; nephews, Tim Thompson, Steve Tallant, Sidney Tallant, Scott Tallant, Chuck Jackson, Don Tallant, Mike Tallant, Kenny Stewart, Brian Stewart; nieces, Sheri Huggins, Ellen Thompson, Pamela Mahoney, Lena Tallant, Pam Dorn, Brenda Stewart; numerous grand nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Gene C. Tallant, Jesse W. Tallant, Jennifer Hollingshead, Daniel Tallant and Chad Anderson; seven great grandchildren. Gene attended Langdon Grammar School in Missouri until 8th grade. He worked with his father on the farm raising livestock and grain in Atchison County, MO. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Marines Corps serving from Nov. 1943 to May 1946 as an Expert Rifleman. He served one year and seven months overseas at Iwo Jima, Volcanic Islands and the Occupation of Japan. After his discharge from the Marines, he moved to Minnesota, and lived in the Osseo, MN area and married Carin Dorothy Burkhart until her death in 1976. Gene worked as a Teamster until suffering a back injury in 1979. He retired to Pequot Lakes, MN enjoying fishing, boating, and gardening. After the death of his son in 2004, his health forced him to move to Omaha in 2005. He lived with his sister Pauline in Omaha until moving to the Primrose Retirement Community in Council Bluffs, IA in 2009. He was a cancer survivor. Gene’s final wishes were to be cremated and his ashes scattered at the gravesite of his wife, Carin and son, Gene in Crystal Lake, MN.
