Harold A. Bandemer

Harold Albert Bandemer was born to Hattie Mary Kubert Bandemer and Albert A. Bandemer on November 17, 1921 on a farm northeast of Gilead, NE and passed away February 11, 2012 in Omaha, NE at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 11 days. Harold attended grade school in District 17, Thayer Co. He completed grades 9 and 10 at Gilead High School and grades 11 and 12 at Hebron High School. He graduated in May 1938. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was inducted on his 21st birthday in Omaha, NE. He was trained in San Diego, CA, in electrical school, Gyro compass school, receiving ship at Goat Island before boarding the USS Detroit on April 14, 1943. He left the States for Pearl Harbor, January 15, 1945, headed for the Marshall Islands and Caroline Islands in the southwest Pacific as part of a supply squadron during the operations and invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He traveled many places, crossing the equator many times, and ending his time in Tokyo Bay on September 1, 1945 where he watched the peace treaty being signed. Detached from USS Detroit on December 15, 1945 and was honorably discharged December 20, 1945 in St. Louis, MO. Harold returned home and started farming with his brother in 1946. On December 28, 1948 he was united in marriage to Doris Mellott. In August 1952 he became manager of Gilead Grain Co. He was transferred to Byron, NE in August 1954 to manage Byron Grain Co. where he remained 33 years until he retired April 30, 1987. Harold was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a volunteer fireman for 32 years, a member of the American Legion Post # 205 and then transferred to Post # 103 in Superior, NE. He served 6 years on the elementary school board, served 6 years on the church council and was a member of the Byron Lions Club for 20 years. In October 1987 he and his wife Doris moved to Omaha, NE. On February 26, 1989 he became a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church. He worked part-time at Sutherlands for one and a half years and then 4 years at Menards until he was forced to stop due to health problems. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marie Mullinix and his brother Loren. He is survived by his wife, Doris Bandemer, son, Clint Bandemer of Bellevue, NE, daughter, Kathy Rahe of Keller, TX, and his sister, Elaine George of Hebron, NE. Harold is survived by grandchildren, Brandi and husband Jimmy Webster of Keller, TX, Nicholas Bandemer and Michael Bandemer; great-grandchildren, Dalton Webster and Shianne Webster of Keller, TX.
