One of her joys in life was talking about her time living on the farm and working with family members. It was also during her young developmental years where she learned to be an excellent seamstress and cook. Skills she would use very well during her working career. She received her formal education at an all-black school Lincoln High. The local institution held grades kindergarten through 12th. This is where she met the love of her life, Oliver Jones. Before he was sent to Basic Training Camp,he proposed to Gwen. A favorite story she loved to tell was the speech at the dinner table Oliver made to her father, asking for his daughter’s hand in marriage. So, in 1948 a romance turned into a marriage that lasted 73 years. They were based in Pine Camp, New York until 1950 when Oliver was transferred to Korea. Already having a brother and sister living in Nebraska, Gwen moved to Omaha to start a permanent family residence. In 1955 the couple had their only child Oliver Jr.. God and family were the most important values in Gwen’s life. On November 3rd 1963, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. A devoted member, she was a regular pioneer in the preaching work for a decade. She also took great pride in her horticulture skills. Her yard and home were always filled with beautiful plants and flowers. She loved a pristine home. The secular work she did as an adult were working as a cook with the specialty of baking a Marriot Hotels for 17 years and Physicians Mutual for 10. Her peach cobbler was always a favorite to family, friends and fellow employees. She would bring food home and give it to the neighborhood families every week. She and Oliver loved to travel and have friends all over the continental United States. In the twilight of her life, she enjoyed getting her fingernails done. Long car rides, eating popcorn and eating butter brickle ice cream. She was always comfortable having company over to her home. Being outside and enjoying Jehovah’s creations. Her smile, laughter, tender touch, and loving heart will be missed.
