SHEEHAN, George F., III. 2/4/1950 – 8/23/2019 Age 69 years of Omaha George F. Sheehan III, age 69 of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully Friday, August 23rd at the Josie Harper Hospice House. George was born on February 4, 1950 to George Jr. and Florence Sheehan. George was the third born child of five, having two older sisters, Barb and Pat, a younger brother, Mike and a younger sister, Ann. He graduated from Omaha South High School in 1968 and attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After George was hired for a seasonal working position with the United States Postal Service, he decided to voluntarily join the United States Air Force and later received his draft papers in the mail while he was away at boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. While stationed in Vietnam, George was recognized, nominated and awarded "Airman of the Month" for July 1970 for his exemplary abilities and received his award in August, 1970. We just learned of this award days ago as we read through his military papers. George was not one to boast, brag or even talk about himself, an example of his modesty and humility. George survived the Vietnam War of 1970 & 1971, but would battle yet another war against the remnants of Vietnam inside his physical body, due to exposure to the chemical herbicide, Agent Orange, just 37 years later. After returning to native soil, stationed at Beale Air Force Base in California, George met a crew chief who would later become his brother-in-law and exchange Christmas gifts between George and his family from Omaha. Upon exiting his military service in 1975, George resumed and continued working for the United States Postal Service for 36 years, retiring as a Quality Improvement Specialist at 55 years young, in 2005. After the Blizzard of 1975, while working, George (25yrs old) met the love of his life, a 19 year old Charlotte Klein of Omaha. Charlotte was working for A-1 Direct Mail at the time. They were engaged, survived the Omaha tornado of 1975, and married all within 7 months. Together, George and Charlotte were blessed with three daughters. George adored his wife and children and was an incredibly supportive husband and father. He loved road trips and traveling with his family. They would travel on new adventures every summer vacation. One of many projects he had fun with every year was displaying Christmas lights on the house through the winter season. While enjoying his family life and career life, George was also maintaining meaningful friendships that would remain throughout his life. Some of which were co-workers who were also military veterans. These friendships meant so much to him. After retiring from the Post Office, George decided to work part-time at Sherwin Williams as a paint delivery truck driver. His working career with Sherwin Williams ended after a delightful 10 years. George was blessed to gain two exceptional son-in-laws that he was so proud to call his own sons. In addition, George was also blessed with six granddaughters, whom he adored and celebrated. He was so proud of his family. George's first battle with cancer started with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2007. He seemed to win that fight in 2012. Unfortunately, it came back as Pancreatic Cancer four years later. He surpassed medical expectations continually over the past three years and those around him even witnessed the miraculous and powerful hand of God on his life, protecting him from physical pain the entire time. Even when George was first diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2016, he was asked, "What are you thinking about after hearing that?" George responded with a very matter of fact, "We just gotta live in love." So simple, yet so profound. A year later, we found this exact statement in a scripture in the Bible, (1 John 4:16). This phrase has been adopted as our family's motto. This simple phrase is a lifestyle we choose to live daily, in honor of George. "We have come into an intimate experience with God's love, and we trust in the love he has for us. God is love! Those who are living in love are living in God, and God lives through them." -1 John 4:16 (tpt). Those of us who were blessed to know George Sheehan or even cross paths with him, are better for it. He's kind hearted, gentle spirited, soft spoken, hilariously funny, so much fun, incredibly integrous with a strong moral compass and above all, a true warrior. Though we miss him deeply everyday, we get to continue to experience him through each other in love. George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence Sheehan, and brother, Michael Sheehan. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Charlotte (Klein) Sheehan; daughters, Danielle (Don) Prell, Nichole (Donnie) Ozanian, and Monica Sheehan; granddaughters Maxine, Melinn, Joy, Annelise, Eleanor and Lilia; sisters, Barbara (Fred) Ferguson, Patricia (Frank) Luke and Ann Roggero. Also survived by many other relatives and friends.
