VORE, Fern L. 12/27/1928 – 8/5/2018 Age 89 years of Omaha Fern is the only daughter and second child born to her parents Ethel Clara and William Clay Johnson. She was born on December 27, 1928 in Omaha, attended Clifton Hill Elementary and graduated from North High School. Fern married Kenneth Bernard Vore on March 3, 1948, in Hiawatha, Kansas. They farmed 122 acres in Missouri Valley, Iowa for 11 years. She prepared meals for the many threshers who helped harvest corn, oats and milo crops. They moved to Omaha in 1960. Fern retired from Immanuel Hospital where she received several honors, including the Caring Kind Award.For a few years after retirement, she volunteered at the Salvation Army. Fern's ancestors homesteaded in Polk County, Nebraska.Her father's family came to America from Sweden. Her Great Grandfather is credited with the naming of Osceola, Nebraska, and the Davis creek in Polk County is named after him. In the fall of 1868, her Great Great Grandparents built a dugout for their family of 13 and built a sod house the following year.Her Grandparents and seven of their children traveled from Audubon, Iowa, to Polk County in a covered wagon.Her Grandfather was a Mason and a builder, so with the help of his children they built a four room house in Osceola, Nebraska and farmed. Members of Fern's family served in every war since the Civil War. Her oldest daughter retired from the U.S. Navy. She loved the Lord, her family, friends, reading, nature, music and the library where she checked out books on pioneer life, Great Plains settlers, the American West, and the Great Depression. Favorite books were The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird and Hard Times. Fern was baptized in a Baptist Church in Omaha.She taught Sunday School, sang solos in church, and helped with Vacation Bible School.Her Great Great Grandfather was the first Minister in Polk County, Nebraska, served on the school board and was a probate judge.Her father was confirmed in the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Swede Home, Nebraska.Fern's brother graduated from Grace Bible College in Omaha, taught Sunday school, and was a missionary. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Forest and two infant children, William Kenneth and Terry Lee Vore.
