MITCHELL, Erma Gertrude November 26th, 1927-November 25th,2020 Erma G. Mitchell was born on November 26, 1927, in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the third of six children born to her parents, Herman and Mattie Smith.During the formative years of Erma’s life, she attended Long Elementary School, Kellom, Howard Kennedy and graduated from Central High School in Omaha. She then went on to further her education at Van Sant School of Business, studying and learning skills that would prepare her for the job market and, eventually, her long career. It was while working at Johnson Drug Store that she met Roscoe Mitchell.They fell in love and married in 1950 and soon after started a family – Bruce and Joan, her son and daughter.They were married for 63 years, until Roscoe’s death in August of 2013. During her lifetime, Erma had a long and rewarding career at Northwestern Bell (now known as CenturyLink) where she worked throughout the company in various departments, eventually retiring from the engineering department after 34 years of service.She was also Union Steward for local 7400 CWA, which gave her the opportunity to travel to various cities on behalf of the employees she represented. Erma joined Pilgrim Baptist Church at an early age and remained a loyal member for more than 60 years. She was active in her church – a member of Wednesday Morning Bible Study Class, the Golden Links and served on the Trustee Board. She was always available to help with the bereaved family’s repast and other church dinners.Always willing to help-out, especially with the cooking, when called upon.Erma served on many committees during her active years as a member of Pilgrim Baptist. In 2013, Erma relocated to Minneapolis to live with her daughter, Joan, after the death of her beloved husband, Roscoe. While living in Minneapolis for seven years she was able to develop a very close relationship with her great grandchildren and make other close connections with family and friends. Family from all over the United States kept in close contact with her on a regular basis to remind her she was not forgotten and that always gave her so much joy. She was preceded in death by her parents and Sisters, Elenora Moffet, Dorothy Brooks, Erline Parks; brothers, William Herman Smith, James “Peter” Smith and many, many loved ones, friends, and family members. Last and but not least her beloved husband of 63 years Roscoe Mitchell. She is survived by son, Bruce Mitchell and wife Patricia Mitchell-Washington D.C.; daughter, Joan Mitchell-Momoh-Minneapolis; granddaughters, Jana Mitchell-Momoh, Marci Pittman, Jane Ujoatu; and grandson, Jon Mitchell-Momoh; great granddaughters, Taris, London, Legend, Moriah, Legacy, Riley and Atarah; great grandson Aaron; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives; special friends, Dennis and Gertrude Fountain, Rodney and Crystal Stewart, Cynthia and Felicia Stewart.
