November 16, 1937 - May 30, 2023

Elizabeth Mae Gulizia was a multi-talented woman of incredible color. Born at St. Elizabeth Hospital on November 16, 1937, she was the second-born child of Mary Helen Gerye and Joseph Charles Boyden. She helped raise her siblings, Roy, Jeanne and Merrijo at 5320 North 28th Avenue. She attended Miller Park Elementary and North High schools. Her parents later divorced, and Liz gained two exceptionally lovely people in her life, stepmother, Mayble (Evans) Boyden and stepfather, Donald Balensiefer.

When Liz was 16 years old, she met her knight in shining armor, Subby Gulizia at the North High School Sock Hop. She later married Subby on June 22, 1957, at St. Peter’s Church in Omaha, Nebraska.

Liz worked at World Insurance from 1955 to 1958 until her first child, Joseph, was born. Following that, she became a full-time mother and homemaker. During those years, John, Jim, Jean, and Jennifer were born. She continued to work, as well, by providing babysitting services, serving in OPS school cafeterias, and by raising and grooming miniature and toy poodles. The poodles loved Liz so much the entire neighborhood heard joyous barking when she returned home for the day.

Liz had countless interests and talents, not the least of which included raising five children. As a skilled piano and accordion player, she offered her expertise to students at Swoboda Music. She was an accomplished artist and painter, working with oils, acrylics, clays, and ceramics. Liz was also an incredible seamstress. She sewed many pieces of clothing for children and grandchildren, in addition to craft and household items. However, the most widely appreciated of her skills was in the kitchen. Sunday dinners were necessary, and Liz had a way of making everything delicious. She was a natural cook, and her food was central to abundant meals. For her family and extended family, Liz was the highlight of any gathering. She lit up every room with her infectious laugh and smile.

Liz was truly loved by many. She is survived by husband Subby of sixty-five years; sons, Joseph (Pattye), John (Anita), James (Amy); daughters, Jean (Steven) Kucirek, and Jennifer Ostblom; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
