Dorothy Mae Eberly February 12, 1929 - February 6, 2019 Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; George and Caroline (Siske) Smith, her son; Michael, brothers; Clarence, Carvin, Herman, Dorus, Robert, sister; Faye Peppersack. She is survived by her sister; Maxine Mayhew; 2 sons; Patrick (Carol), Jerry, 4 daughters; Shirley, Jeannie (Paul) Sortman, Barbara Penner, Joy, grandchildren; Pamela, Patrick, Carrie, Matthew, Megan, William, Laura, Suzi, Sarah, Jason, Kyle, 17 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dorothy was born in Seneca, Kansas.She was the 5th of 8 children.Her father was a carpenter. Her mother had come as a German immigrant to America as a child.Amidst hard times in the Great Depression, she and her brother Herman, were sent to live on the Joe Amos farm near DuBois, NE for a couple of years until things improved. She attended school in Seneca through the 10th grade, delivered the town newspaper, and visited the principal’s office frequently. During the summer of 1946 she met Charles Eberly, a 19 year old combat veteran of WWII, at a local dance club After a 5 week romance, they were married in July, and proceeded to have 7 children over the next dozen years.Things were very difficult in those years. They moved often, living in a small trailer house much of the time. She endured. In 1956, after a move to Omaha, she worked first at the Fuller Brush Company, then at Western Electric for 18 years. She divorced in 1967 after constant problems and 30 different addresses.In 1972, she married Bob Otte whom she divorced in 1979. She began bar tending at the Village Tavern 1982, and worked there until she was near 80.She enjoyed needlework, sewing, and creating keepsakes for her grandchildren while living at the same address in Ralston for over 25 years - a personal record. Life was hard for Dorothy, but she endured. She won't be forgotten by those that knew her. We would like to thank the staff at Hickory Villa and at Pathways for Compassions Hospice for the loving care they gave to our mother Dorothy.
