Delores A. Iske
11/12/1946 – 11/20/2024
Dee was born to parents Louie and Edith Kantor on November 12, 1946, in Stromsburg, NE, and lived near Silver Creek. She grew up in a close family of Polish descent and even spoke Polish when she was a young child. The family moved to the Ralston area to live on the feedlot where her dad worked, when Dee was about 5. The family moved to Springfield, NE during Dee’s freshman year of high school and she graduated from Platteview High.
After high school, Dee worked at Paul’s Drug store where she met the love of her life, Ron Iske. She recalled their first date was at King’s Drive-in where Ron ate a gigantic burger, but she was too nervous to eat. Ron proposed by the KFAB tower and they went on to spend 55 years of marriage devoted to each other. They were blessed with two sons, Chris and Pat.
Dee always wanted to be a nurse. She started her career at Clarkson Hospital where she trained to be a Nurse’s Aide. She attended Omaha Public School of Practical Nursing to get her LPN and after about 10 years went back to the College of St. Mary to obtain her BSN. She worked at Clarkson for over 43 years and spent a large part of that time as an ER nurse.
Dee was very dedicated to the Lord and St. Columbkille Parish. She taught religious ed for over 25 years and led the Women’s Guild for many years. She was a driving force in many church functions. She could be seen at the Fish Fry every week serving desserts and adding a little cherry pie filling because, as she said, it makes everything better. She also worked at countless cookie walks, church festivals, and luncheons. If there was something that needed to be done at the church, Dee was always there to help.
Dee and Ron loved to camp. They started with a pop-up camper that the boys remember as being able to sleep 10 because everything folded into a bed. The boys teased that when they eventually upgraded to the fifth-wheel camper, it only slept 5. Dee’s favorite destination for camping was Estes Park. She loved the beautiful mountains and watching the Elk when they came into town during rutting season.
Dee loved her family. She was the oldest of 6 siblings. The other siblings lovingly called her the warden because of the way she bossed them around when left in charge when they were young. As adults, the siblings and their spouses spent many happy times camping together. They also took numerous cruises together throughout the years. Dee devoted herself to raising her two boys and was proud that they turned out to be such wonderful men.
Dee will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Ron; parents, Louie and Edith Kantor; brother, Jimmy Kantor; brother-in-law, Vic Keen. She is survived by sons, Chris (Amy) and Pat (Kristen); grandson Brandon (Molly) Iske and great-grandson Charlie; sisters, Pat (Jim) Blum, Barb (John) Kohl, Shirley Keen, and Jo Ann (Dean) Shepler, and sister-in-law Patti Kantor.
