Daniel C. Tanner

September 9, 1956 — May 5, 2020

Dan (Danny, Daniel, Dad - he responded to all) Tanner was always the life of the party. The first one in and the last one out. Always approachable and laughing, Dan would make sure the party, or Saturday afternoon on his boat, was a good time. In the span of an afternoon he would ask his guests countless times: Are you good? Do you need a drink? Are you having fun? He was always a gracious host. He was born in Omaha, NE on September 9, 1956 to Allen and Shirley Tanner. He joined his older siblings, sister Sandy, brother Gary. The following year his brother Scott completed the circle.Growing up Dan and Scott were the best of friends. Being so close in age meant their mother would dress them as twins until the age of 5. Dan and Scott ended up in the same friend circle and each had a built-in partner in crime. The two of them were always up to something. For instance, as young adults they drove their motorcycles to Yellowstone. They experienced all four seasons in one day, only pulling over because hail at 60 MPH hurts. They spent all their money on the trip and ran out of gas 40 miles from home. They ended up asking strangers for gas money. In his 20s, Dan met his first wife Ann. They married and after spending a few years camping and traveling the country by motorcycle they settled down and had their first child, Stephanie. Their second child, Rick was born a few short years later. Dan’s treasured times with his children included bike riding with his daughter down the Papio Creek trail, golfing with his son, skiing in Colorado, paintballing for Rick’s birthday and eating cake and ice cream at 4am when he would get home from work on Stephanie’s birthday. It was after his children were born that Dan decided to change careers from a phone technician at Engineered Systems to enrolling into the Omaha Police Academy. Dan went on to proudly serve the city for 20 years as an Omaha Police officer. Even though the job was hard, stressful, and mentally draining Dan went in day in and day out knowing that it was his duty. He was awarded many accolades including Officer of the Year Nominee in 2003, 2007, and 2011.Dan was also Officer of the Month in June 2004. In 2006, he met his wife, Michelle. In the early years of their relationship Dan and Michelle often enjoyed lazy days on his boat on the river. Dan didn’t see a point of a lake. He would say repeatedly, “why go in circles all day, when you can float down the Muddy Mo”. In his younger years he enjoyed thrilling activities like cliff diving and white-water rafting. He then moved on to lower impact activities including shuffleboard and bowling. After retiring from shuffleboard, he took up the hobby of pool. He and Michelle enjoyed playing pool together. Even traveling to Las Vegas for tournaments and fun. In the recent years, life caught up to him and he endured a battle with throat cancer. Always a fighter, he was in remission the last four years. The past five years weren’t easy and major life adjustments were hard on Dan. However, he was blessed with his first grand daughter, Elana, in 2018. While their time together was short, thanks to technology he received daily photos and videos. Dan never missed a moment or opportunity to comment on her development. Another love these last few years were his dogs Leo and Max. Their energy and puppy like behavior kept him smiling and active. Dan is preceded in death by parents, Allen & Shirley; brother Gary; and sister Sandra . Dan is survived by his wife Michelle; daughter Stephanie (Jonathan) Rubinfeld; son Richard Tanner; stepdaughter Ashley (Josh) Hinrichs; granddaughter Elana Rubinfeld; brother Scott (Colleen) Tanner; former wife Ann Napravnik-Tanner; many other relatives and friends; and fur babies Leo and Max.
