McCLAIN, Dale E. Age 89 of Omaha Dale Eugene McClain was born October 14, 1927 in Carson Iowa and passed away peacefully on Sunday July 23, 2017.Dale was 89. Dale was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years JoAnn L. (Tunberg) McClain, his parents Fay E. McClain and Ellen C. (Heady) McClain and brothers Lyle and Thomas McClain. Dale is survived by his son Jon McClain of Cushing MN and daughter Karen (Lloyd) Anthony of Gretna NE.Also surviving are four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.Tara (Robert) McClain-Streff of Belvidere IL, Katy (Brian) Hobbins of Edina MN, Blake (Nichole) Anthony of North Platte NE and Rachel (Dustin) Wonder of Denver CO.Surviving great grandchildren are Caden and Colton Streff, Emilia Hobbins, and Brantley and Neleigh Anthony. Dale graduated from Soldier Iowa High School in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy.He was assigned to active duty on the USS Bluebird Submarine Rescue Ship as part of the Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor.Dale had a great throwing arm and joined the Naval Baseball Team at Pearl as a pitcher.Much to the dismay of his shipmates, Dale was able to skip many training and sea missions because the team had a home game or travel to another base to play.He was fine with that! Dale also served part of his enlistment at the Naval Base HQ 17th in the Aleutian Islands before returning to the mainland for an Honorable Discharge in 1948.Back in Omaha he was introduced to his future wife by his younger brother Lyle and Dale and JoAnn were married on March 17th, 1950. Enlisted in the Naval Reserve, Dale was recalled to active duty in 1952 due to the Korean Conflict so the newlyweds moved to San Diego where Dale was assigned to service at the Naval Air Station.After 16 months of additional service he was discharged again and the couple returned to Omaha. Both Dale and JoAnn went to work at the Ordinance Plant in Mead before they moved to Fremont when Dale took a new job with Nebraska State Savings & Loan.Dale worked at Nebraska State for almost 30 years before moving to Omaha to become the Sr. Vice President of Human Resources at Occidental Federal Savings Bank.He retired from banking in 1990. In retirement, Dale spent the next 7 years Driving School Buses and Special Education Vans for the Millard School system and another 7 years working for the Omaha Auto Auction. During his life Dale achieved many accomplishments.Dale received a Master in Finance Degree from The American Savings & Loan Institute in Chicago, was Chairman of the Park and Recreation Board in Fremont, and was a member of The American Legion, The Eagles Club, Sertoma, and Toastmasters Club. Dale did not like to sit still, so he was always available to usher at St. Paul’s and in his free time, Dale loved to fish, garden and travel on many Mustache Joe Tours.Moreover, Dale loved his family and friends. He spent many hours with his grandchildren and relatives.He was a gentle and kind man and will certainly be missed by all who knew him! Memorial Service: Monday, July 31 at 2:00 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 13271 Millard Ave. Omaha, NE 68137. Memorials may be made to the family to be used at their discretion.
