Caryl Jean Hultquist was born in Oakland, Nebraska on December 6, 1934 to parents Carroll Johnson and Ruth (Nelson) Johnson. Growing up, Caryl lived on her family farm with her parents and sister, Ruth Joan (Johnson) Stone, before graduating from Oakland High School in 1952. On January 6th, 1956 she married her high school sweetheart, Tom J. Hultquist, before he was deployed to Japan.
Caryl received her bachelor’s degree from Wayne State College where she studied teaching, and she began her teaching career in a country school. Caryl and Tom moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where Tom finished serving his country until 1962. They both then attended the University of Nebraska-Kearney where they both received their master’s degree in 1967. Tom and Caryl had three children: Michael, Matthew, and Kary.
Caryl worked for Omaha Public Schools for many years. She was principal at Belle Ryan Elementary, and was the first principal of Catlin Elementary. She also taught 3rd grade at Columbian Elementary School for over 20 years. Tom and Caryl enjoyed their summers off from teaching, with their children where they enjoyed camping and visiting museums and national monuments across the country. Tom and Caryl retired in 1995, and they spent many years as winter Texans in McAllen. They enjoyed drives to South Padre Island, square dancing, and volunteering in Texas elementary schools as ESL tutors. For a number of years they were camp hosts at Mahoney State Park.
Caryl and Tom were always on the go, being their children and grandchildren’s biggest fans traveling to all their events. In her free time Caryl enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, shopping, playing games, cuddling her Boston Terriers, and viewing the birds outside.
Caryl was preceded in death by her newborn son Michael Thomas Hultquist, parents Carroll and Ruth Johnson, and her husband of 65 years Tom Hultquist. She is survived by children Matt (Stacey) Hultquist, Kary (Byron) Johnson; her sister Ruth Stone; and grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Justin, Kiley, Brooke, and Bradyn.
