Carol Ann Madeleine Hausman Walsh was born February 4, 1934, in Saint Joseph, Missouri. She was the oldest of three girls born to Rosa and Oscar Hausman. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in 1951. She completed Business School and was accomplished in typing, shorthand, and proofreading. Her greatest accomplishment was the love she had for her family. Carol married Jack Walsh in 1954. They were blessed with eleven children, who all married. Carol accepted each spouse and loved them as her own. Jack and Carol lovingly welcomed 60 grandchildren, and a running total of 96 great-grandchildren. They lived in Overland Park, Kansas, and eventually raised their family in Omaha, Nebraska. Her husband, Jack, died in 2013. She spent the last years of her life at her daughter’s home in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Carol’s life was a testament to devotion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to those around her. She was a faithful Catholic her whole life. She was devoted to The Blessed Mother, praying a daily rosary which she continued till her death. She passed this faith to her family, attending every Sacrament she could for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol was prolife to her core. She welcomed each new baby as the most precious gift God had ever created. As a devoted grandmother, she kept track of each grandchild’s milestones with remarkable care. Her ability to make every one of her grandchildren feel like her favorite was a gift, each felt uniquely seen and loved. The grandchildren could always find a sweet snack in Grandma’s legendary “treat basket”. Though German by birth, she embraced her husband's Irish roots and always celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day with everything green, soda bread, and Reuben sandwiches. She had a knack for making every holiday magical, she loved shopping for bargains, trying to find the best gifts and filling the house with decorations. Carol’s devotion extended to her great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. Her open arms and lap welcomed them always.
Carol was always willing to “drop everything” to help a friend or family member at a moment’s notice. Carol was a woman of class and humility. She was famous for her pies, stir-fry, liver and onions, and lovingly crocheted Afghans. She could paint walls, put up wallpaper, make her own pickles, make “chow”, and even cut down a small tree before leaving for the hospital to give birth! (Jeff child #9 in 1969) Carol was known for her large heirloom tomatoes in the garden. She was a Scrabble enthusiast. She sang in the choir in her younger days and later learned to play in the handbell choir at her church. She never refused a new experience. She snowmobiled, skated, danced, coached softball and taught 11 teenagers to drive. Summer vacations meant time spent at Bean Lake outside Saint Joseph with her husband, children, nieces, nephews and parents. This is where blistering sunburns were frequent. Carol liked taking 8MM movies of her kids, helping with or writing their term papers and teaching them the Catholic faith through her daily actions.
Carol sacrificed, went without, could stretch one modest income to supply the needs of the family of 13, and still be generous to the less fortunate. Carol supplied food for the Francis House in Omaha for many years. She worked at the Department of Education for Omaha Catholic schools, the Tip Top factory in administration and at Creighton University. Carol’s favorite charities (she had many) were the School Sister of Christ the King (https://www.cksisters.org/donate), St. Pius/St. Leo Catholic School, Alaskan Catholic Missions, and Helping Hands Medical Missions (https://hhmm.org/about-us/support-our-missions).
