Betty "Elaine" Wentworth

December 16, 1931 — May 10, 2021

Wentworth, Betty "Elaine" (Reed) December 16, 1931 – May 10, 2021 At age 89, Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, son Rodney L. Wentworth (Rosalee), seven siblings and her former husband Robert L. Wentworth. Survived by children Sheila K. Martin (Jack), Joel R. Wentworth (Laurey Steinke), Zale Schafer (Tom) and Stacey Stephens, twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. Born in Edson, Kansas, she grew up in Franklin County, Nebraska, graduating from Riverton High School in 1949. She lived in Omaha since 1952. A faithful member of Good News Church (formerly Glad Tidings Assembly of God) for almost seventy years, she was one of the last members to have moved from the original church location at 19th and Cass St. to its current site. Elaine raised five children. Among their happiest memories is the time she took to read to them, usually at bedtime. An adventure book titled “Keepers of the Trail” by Joseph Altsheler is fondly remembered. Another memory is of the time spent listening together to the Vinyl LP album of Bizet’s orchestral suite from”Carmen”. The children had never seen that opera, so they made up their own stories to the music. Many hours were spent with board games, and the frequently heard words “you want us to roll it for you, mom?” serve as a reminder of just how busy a homemaker she often had to be. Elaine’s career included many positions, culminating in her being the sole remaining non-salaried employee of any Nebraska- chartered Savings and Loan. A devout Christian, always respectful of education and learning, she facilitated bible study classes even into her eighties. She passed away peacefully in hospice care after a long struggle with congestive heart failure.
