MAYHUE, Betty L. 3/14/1940 – 2/6/2019 Age 78 years of Omaha STARTING THE JOURNEY Betty Lou Rogers was born on March 14, 1940 in Stephens, Arkansas. She was the eighth of ten children born to Guy Rogers and Leatha Sherman Rogers. She attended Lafayette School in Camden, Arkansas before moving to Omaha, NE in 1950 and attending Omaha Public Schools.During a school-yard scuffle, Betty caught the eye of a certain young man who appreciated the scrappy nature of this small, shy girl.Betty eventually met and married that young man, Ed Mayhue, her husband of 42 years.Even though he was on Active Duty with the U.S. Air Force and they had started having children, Betty remained in Omaha and lived with her mother-in-law.They enjoyed a close relationship. THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY Betty created a warm, nurturing home for her family and taught her children and grandchildren the importance of having a good education, the value of family and the power of prayer.Family was always a high priority. The house on Lafayette Avenue was the place for many Sunday dinners, family gatherings and holiday get-togethers.She made sure everyone felt welcome in the home of the Mayhues. Traveling to family reunions, taking road trips with her brothers, attending church luncheons with her sister it didn’t matter how the time was spent, as long as she was with family. MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER AND CAREGIVER As her children grew older, Betty found herself volunteering at their schools as a chaperone for school trips, in the cafeteria as an aide and as a crossing guard. She was a basketball and track and field mom sitting in the stands cheering not only for her girls but she supported their teammates too.She very much enjoyed being a grandmother. She was called Maw Maw by the oldest ones and later it changed to Granny by the younger grandchildren. She made time for each one even if it was just sitting down watching a movie with “the grands”. She helped plant a vegetable garden with her father after he came to live in her home.It was something that reminded him of his home in Arkansas that he could work in and tend to.She later started a flower garden and eventually tended to both up to the time that she sold and moved out of the Lafayette Ave house. After the deaths of her father and husband, she became a companion to seniors who were homebound working with the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging (ENOA).Everyone loved Betty and the clients and families looked forward to her visits. DEVOTED TO PRAYING AND SERVING Her commitment to follow Jesus and honor God was not only important to her for her own life but she wanted her family to experience his love, peace and blessings just like she had.She would get her family together every first Saturday morning of the month for prayer. She did not care about your employment schedule, basketball game or any other obligations. God and family come first. It was the time to celebrate accomplishments, cry a little bit and praise the Father for it all. She served in her church as an usher on Sunday mornings, for funerals, revival services, State Convocation for the Church of God in Christ and many other special meetings.Preparing food and serving it for funerals were ways she put her faith into action. Betty wanted to make sure that all of her children (grands included) knew how to pray and to seek after God. FINISHING THE JOURNEY Even as she began showing signs of the Alzheimer’s disease, Betty remained the kind and gentle woman many people had known for years. Her love for family and her faith in God never diminished although her memories were slowly declining. Her wish to see her children grow up, get married and have their own children brought her joy.She would constantly say “I want to live out my life and not be a burden to anyone”.You were never a burden. It was our blessing to have you as our mother. You have finished the race and completed the task the Lord Jesus has given. Now receive your reward in heaven.
